REVISION SUMMARY

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Audi has developed several updates for your R8 that we would like to install.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

We will provide an update to the Engine Control Module and Transmission Control Module.

NOTE: Check ELSAWeb on the day of repair to verify vehicle eligibility and attach the screen print to the repair order. This is the only valid campaign inquiry and verification source. Some vehicles may be involved in an additional action(s); any additional work can be done while the vehicle is in for this action.

ALLOCATION REPORT OF AFFECTED VEHICLES

In the Service Manager's Package, dealers with affected vehicles received a report containing the complete VIN with customer name and address data. Dealers did not receive a report if they had no affected vehicles.

NOTE: The allocation report contains owner names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. By law, this data may only be used for recall purposes. Use for any other reason may be a violation of law in many states/provinces. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report.

PARTS INFORMATION AND ALLOCATION

On or about January 25, 2008 you received a 40% initial allocation of parts. If you have exhausted your allocated parts for vehicles affected by this safety recall, but have exceeded your Upper Order Limit, please submit your requests for additional material via email to upperorderlimits@audi.com. 

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING

On or about February 1, 2008 Audi sent a letter to all known owners of affected vehicles. A sample copy of this letter is enclosed.

CLAIM ENTRY PROCEDURE

Immediately upon completion of the repair work, enter the Repair Operation(s) from the chart below and the Applicable Criteria ID that is shown in ElsaWeb. Claims will only be paid for vehicles that show this campaign open in ElsaWeb on the day of the repair  . To help ensure prompt and proper payment, attach the screen print to the repair order.

Loaner car should not be charged to warranty on SAGA claim. Dealers should provide a service loaner vehicle as found in the Audi R8 dealer agreement. Pick up and delivery of vehicles should be arranged through the Audi R8 Customer CARE specialist.

If Customer Refuses Repairs:  Fax the Repair Order to VWoA at (248) 754-5093 and provide VIN, applicable Service Number, Customer Information, Dealer Number, and Date.

WORK SEQUENCE

Section A (Criteria 01) - Software update using Software Version Management (SVM)
NOTE:
  • Obtain the owner's written consent for any requested repair under warranty or outside warranty that requires flashing, which will automatically overwrite the "Tuned" program.
NOTE:
  • Any Update Programming procedure (flash) may overwrite any "TUNED" ECM or TCM programming. A "TUNED" ECM or TCM is described as any ECM or TCM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and Specifications approved by Audi Of America, LLC.

    Current Tuned ECM or TCM requirements: If you encounter a vehicle with a "Tuned" ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:

  • Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.
  • Notify the owner any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, LLC warranties.
NOTE:
  • As for all work where the ignition has to be left switched on for a Song period, a battery charger must be connected to ensure an adequate power supply.
  • Please switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment (blower, seat heater, interior light, etc.).
  • Also make sure that no electromagnetic interference sources (mobile phone, Bluetooth, etc.) are operated in or near the vehicle while individual control units are being updated.
  • Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- or -VAS 5051B- or -VAS 5052- (with online capability) to the vehicle.
  • Connect -VAS 5051 - or -VAS 5052- to your workshop network (CPN) using network connection cable.
  • Insert memory stick so Diagnosis Log can be recorded following SVM update.
  • Select "Guided Fault Finding".

  • Enter the SVM update into the User Test Plan by selecting the following inside Guided Fault Finding  :

    Go to >> Function/Component Selection >> Problem Related Hardware and Software Update >> Direct Input: SVM code for problem related update. 

  • Perform a "Problem-related hardware and software update". Use the SVM code 17C5A001.
  • Enter your GeKo ID when requested and data will be transmitted to the SVM server, which will respond with instructions to continue.
    NOTE:
    • If you encounter problems with the SVM software update, please refer to technical bulletin 2011732 - Software Version Management (SVM), Operating instructions.
    • If unable to resolve issues with SVM, please contact the appropriate technical support team per technical bulletin 2011732 - Software Version Management (SVM).
  • Answer the Warranty questions accordingly and save the Diagnostic Log when prompted.
  • Once completed, exit Guided Fault Finding  via the Go to  button.
  • Proceed to Section B. 

Section B (Criteria 03) - Attaching Label for Sump
  • Remove 2 rear underbody noise insulation panels.
  • Clean surface of crossmember where label is to be attached.
  • Stick label (079 010 527) indicating tightening torque for oil drain plugs to cross piece so that arrow points to rear oil drain plug.

    NOTE:
    • Do not reinstall lower noise insulation panels at this time!
Section C (Criteria 04) - Checking antifreeze concentration of coolant
NOTE:
  • Not all vehicles require criterion 04. Please refer to ElsaWeb for appropriate repairs to be performed for each specific VIN. Some vehicles require repair criterion 04 while some vehicles will require criterion 05 instead.
  • Install protective fender covers.
  • Check coolant level using VAG 1274.
  • Check antifreeze concentration of coolant using refractometer -T10007-.
  • If antifreeze protection is good for -40°C, no further work is required.
  • If antifreeze protection is less than -40°C, proceed as follows:.
  • Drain cooling system using steps in Repair Manual >> Engine >> Engine Mechanical>> 19 Engine - Cooling System >> Cooling system, draining and filling.

  • Fill system with coolant with correct antifreeze concentration.

    Tip:

    • Make sure you put in the same amount of coolant as you drained off. If the coolant level is at max, even though less coolant was put in than was drained off. there is still air in the cooling system and it must be bled. 
Section D (Criteria 05) - Inspecting cooling system
NOTE:
  • Not all vehicles require criterion 05. Please refer to ElsaWeb for appropriate repairs to be performed for each specific VIN. Some vehicles require repair criterion 04 while some vehicles will require criterion 05 instead.
  • Check coolant level.

  • If coolant level is at max., no further work is required.
  • If coolant level is at min., check cooling system for leaks.
  • Repair any leaks that are found.
Section E (Criteria 06) - Servicing noise insulation panels

To increase water drainage, several holes will be added to the 2 underbody noise insulation panels using the following steps:

NOTE:
  • Holes should be drilled at approximate locations as illustrated. Holes should be located at low points (depressions in plastic noise insulation panels) to allow water to drain properly.

Front noise insulation

  • Drill 2 holes (10 mm dia.) at the points indicated by a green arrow and a green circle.
  • Drill 2 holes (20 mm dia.) at the points indicated by a red arrow and a red circle.

  • Deburr holes after drilling.

Rear noise insulation

  • Drill 4 holes (20 mm dia.) at the points indicated in the illustration.

  • Deburr holes after drilling.
  • Install noise insulation panels.
Section F (Criteria 07) - Servicing bracket for side panel cover (side blade)
  • Remove side panel cover (left and right) per sections below.

Removing

  • Carefully loosen the bonded joint between the air intake grille -1- and the side panel cover -2- -arrows-using appropriate plastic trim tool.

  • Remove left side interior engine compartment trim.
  • Remove panel -9- by pushing tabs on rear of panel (accessible through engine compartment) to gain access to bolt -8-.

  • Bolt -3- is accessible through air intake grille.
  • Remove bolts -2- and -4- (-8- and -3- on previous illustration).
  • With bolts -2- and -4- removed, carefully pull the side panel cover -3- out of the guides in the direction of travel -arrow-.

  • Deburr unpainted (middle) mount (item -18- in beginning of Section F) for side panel trim using a hole file.

  • Install new O-ring (WHT 003 811) (item -17- in beginning of section F) onto middle mounting post of left side panel cover.

  • Do not reinstall side panel cover at this time.

Removing

  • Remove the engine compartment trim.
  • Disconnect the cable ties -3- on the emergency release cable -1- on the rear crossmember.

  • Carefully loosen the bonded joint between the air intake grille -1- and the side panel cover -2- in direction of -arrows- using appropriate plastic trim tool.

  • Remove right interior engine compartment trim.
  • Remove panel -9- by pushing tabs on rear of panel (accessible through engine compartment) to gain access to bolt -8-.

  • Remove bolts -2- and -4- (-8- and -3- as shown in previous illustration).
  • Bolt -4- is accessible through air intake grille.
  • Carefully pull the side panel cover -1- out of the guides in the direction of travel -arrow-.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector -1- on the fuel tank lid unlock motor -V155-.
  • Remove the ventilation hose -2- on the fuel filler insert -3-.

  • Deburr unpainted middle mount (item -18- in beginning of Section F) for side pane! trim for side panel trim using a hole file.

  • Install new O-ring (WHT 003 811) (item -17- in beginning of section F) onto middle mounting post of left side panel cover.

  • Do not reinstall side panel cover at this time.
Section G (Criteria 08) - Servicing upper trim
  • Detach upper trim.
  • Install foam filler piece at the position marked (illustration) (420 853 447 left side or 420 853 448 right side).

Section H (Criteria 10) - Servicing B-pillar trim
  • Clean surfaces and install 2 additional foam filler pieces below existing ones (420 854 863).

NOTE:
  • If no foam filler pieces are installed, simply install 2 foam filler pieces for left side of car and 2 foam filler pieces for right side of car at locations show by -arrows-.
Section I (Criteria 12) - Replacing hose
  • With side panel trim removed, remove hose from filler flap insert.
  • Guide new hose into filler flap insert (420 809 937 A).

    Tip:

    • Make sure that the hose is correctly inserted in the connecting pipe located in the vehicle body. 

Installing right side panel cover

Installation is in reverse of removal, but note the following:

  • Remove the old adhesive on the air intake grilled and the side panel cover.
  • Attach new double-sided tape -1- to the air intake grille -arrow-.

  • Check the adjusting element nut -1- for ease of movement -arrows-.
  • Rotate the adjusting nut all the way down but do not tighten it.

  • Insert the side panel cover in the guides.
  • Tighten the bolts -2- (10 Nm) and -4- (10 Nm).

    NOTE:
    • When tightening the bolts, the adjusting nuts and adjusting elements turn against the side panel cover mounting points -3- and then secure.
  • Press the side panel cover onto the tape.
  • Route the emergency release cable -1- as shown in the illustration.
  • Secure the emergency release cable on the rear crossmember with cable ties.

  • The pull loop -2- on the emergency release cable must move easily and it must possible to pull it.

Installing left side panel cover

  • Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
  • Remove the old adhesive on the air intake grilled and the side panel cover.

  • Attach new double-sided tape -1- to the air intake grille -arrow-.
  • Check the adjusting element nut -1- for ease of movement -arrows-.

  • Rotate the adjusting nut all the way down but do not tighten it.
  • Insert the side panel cover in the guides.
  • Tighten the bolts -2- (10 Nm) and -4- (10 Nm).

    NOTE:
    • When tightening the bolts, the adjusting nuts and adjusting elements turn them against the side panel cover mounting points -3- and secure them.
  • Press the side panel cover onto the tape.
  • Perform a water drain test:
  • Pour water into the filler flap insert.
  • Check that the water drains out only from the drain pipe on the vehicle underside.
Section J (Criteria 13) - Servicing rear lock carrier
  • Open tailgate.
  • Clean surfaces on each side of rear lid lock and stick on dear plastic sticker (420 813 312).

Section K (Criteria 15) - Servicing radio navigation system
  • Fold out RNS-E display.
  • Check for felt strip previously installed.
  • Cut and trim to fit and attach a felt strip (533 867 910 A) to the frame of the display holder at the position marked (length approximately 157 mm x 10mm).

    • If felt strip is already present, no further work is required.

WORK IS COMPLETE.

What vehicles are affected? 

Model Year 2008 Audi R8 vehicles. Please see the JW Service Action Circular on ElsaWeb for specific VIN list, and always verify the status of the campaign by VIN in ElsaWeb Campaign/Action screen.

How many vehicles are affected? 

There are 236 vehicles affected in the United States and 37 vehicles affected in Canada.

What is being addressed? 

This customer satisfaction campaign is designed to offer updates to a number of product features, which may include the engine control module, transmission control module, Bose amplifier control module and magnetic ride control module. Please be aware that each vehicle may require one or more different control module updates.

How long does the repair take? 

The repair takes approximately one day to complete.

Is a loaner vehicle being offered under this action? 

Audi will provide a pick up and delivery service or a courtesy car while the vehicles are being serviced.

NOTE: Pick up and delivery is through Auto Logistics and will be dispatched by our R8 team. Do not inform the customer to contact Roadside Assistance for this campaign.

Do I have to make an appointment? 

Audi R8 Customer CARE specialists will contact each customer individually to assist with the arrangements concerning this satisfaction campaign. Customers are also welcome to contact their authorized Audi R8 dealer to make arrangements themselves.

When will this repair be available? 

Audi will begin this Customer Satisfaction Campaign on February 1, 2008.
