Tightening Specifications
The tightening specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or blackened nuts and bolts.
Additional lubricant such as engine or transmission oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.
Do not use any parts that have had the lubrication removed.
Tightening specification tolerance: ±15%.

Procedure
Replace any bolts that were tightened with an additional turn.
Replace self-locking nuts and bolts and seals, gaskets and O-rings.
The hose connections as well as the air guide pipes and hoses must be free of oil and grease before installing.
Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type as those equipped by the factory .
When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.
-- Clean the threaded holes in the cylinder block for connecting the engine and transmission using a thread tap before installing the transmission.
-- Before installing a replacement engine, make sure the semi-circular ring -arrow- is inserted in the power steering pump driveshaft.
-- Install the engine support and engine mount, refer to ASSEMBLY MOUNTS OVERVIEW .
-- Install the left coolant pipe in the center, refer to LEFT COOLANT PIPE IN CENTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission:
-- Turn the torque converter so that hole next to the notch -arrow- is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.
There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.
-- Insert the Clutch Module Transportation LockT40170 in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.
-- When jointing the engine and subframe, hold the ATF lines in their installation position.
-- Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.
-- Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] Transmission, Removing and Installing .
-- Position the transmission on the engine. Be careful of the starter.
-- Tighten bolts -1 to 11-.
-- Remove the Clutch Module Transportation LockT40170.
The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.
-- Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.
-- Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).
-- Insert the Crankshaft SocketT40058 guide pins as follows:
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
-- Continue turning the crankshaft 180° in the direction of the engine rotation using the Crankshaft SocketT40058 -arrow-.
-- Tighten the bolts that are accessible in this position to the tightening specification, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] Torque Converter .
-- Turn the crankshaft 60° farther and tighten the remaining five bolts to the tightening specification, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] Torque Converter .
-- Tighten the drive axles on the transmission flange shafts, refer to Drive Axle .
-- Install the ATF cooler, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] ATF Circuit .
-- Install right coolant pipe, refer to RIGHT COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the right catalytic converter, refer to MUFFLER OVERVIEW .
-- Install the ATF lines, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] ATF Circuit .
-- Install the power steering hydraulic line, refer to Power Adjustable Steering Column Control Module J866, Removing and Installing .
-- Install the transmission mount and the transmission support, refer to TRANSMISSION SUPPORT AND REAR TRANSMISSION MOUNT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the left catalytic converter, refer to MUFFLER OVERVIEW .
-- Lift the engine/transmission assembly with the Scissor Lift TableVAS6131A.
-- Align the subframe and tunnel crossmember using the marks made on the longitudinal members during removal.
-- Tighten the tunnel crossmember bolts, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] Assembly Mounts .
-- Tighten the subframe bolts only to the tightening specifications, do not tighten them further (tighten the bolts only after axle alignment), refer to Subframe .
Risk of accident due to loose connections.
- If the bolts in the subframe are not tightened to final torque, vehicle must not be driven.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
-- Install the emergency release cable, refer to [For transmission(s) 0BK] Selector Mechanism .
-- Install the driveshaft, refer to Driveshaft, Bolts on Transmission Side Overview .
-- Install the front muffler, refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Attach the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear, refer to Steering .
-- Install the upper control arm and suspension strut, refer to Suspension Strut and Upper Control Arm .
-- Install the subframe crossbrace and stabilizer bar, refer to Subframe 1
-- Install the braces on the transmission mounts, refer to ASSEMBLY MOUNTS OVERVIEW .
-- Install the brake caliper, refer to Front Brakes .
-- Attach the positive cables to the positive terminal, refer to Battery, Starter, Generator, Cruise Control .
-- Install the lower longitudinal member, refer to .
-- Install the air guide pipes, refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING OVERVIEW .
-- Install the wires, fuse panel, and engine compartment E-box cover, refer to Relay Panels, Fuse Panels and E-BoxesRelease Tool Set VAS1978/35 and appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS information.
