Infrared System, Calibrating
There are two choices for calibrating:
The "complete alignment"
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if a wheel alignment and calibration/adjustment should be performed.
- The rear axle toe was adjusted.
- The vehicle suspension was changed, for example changing from standard to sport suspension.
The "quick access"
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if only the calibration/adjustment will be performed.
- The test plan in the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester requires a recalibration.
- The Night Vision System Camera -R212- was removed and installed or replaced.
- The bumper or radiator grille was removed and installed or replaced.
TIP:
Both procedures are programmed in the wheel alignment computer. The respective procedure is performed automatically. It is only necessary to select the appropriate program for the procedure that will be performed.
If only the night vision system calibration/adjustment should be performed, select the "quick start" mode on the wheel alignment computer.
The procedure in the "quick access" mode is described in the following.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Wheel Alignment Computer approved by VW/Audi
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A
- Setting Device - Basic Set :VAS 6430/1 or Setting Device - Basic Set :VAS 6430/1A
- Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6
- Adapter VAS 6430/9 :VAS 6430/9 , only for surface mounted hoist with a dimension greater than 300 mm.
Procedure
As an example, the procedure is described for the Wheel Alignment Computer :VAS 701 001 .
- Note the test requirements. Refer to the appropriate service information .
- Follow the measurement preparations for calibrating/adjusting the driver assistance systems. Refer to the appropriate service information .
-- Check if the Night Vision System Camera -R212- fits correctly in the bracket and the viewing range for the camera is not blocked.
-- Check if the protective window on the Night Vision System Camera -R212- is damaged by a stone impact and replace if necessary. Refer to Protective Window, Removing .
-- Vehicle with rear axle steering: drive the vehicle "straight" onto the alignment rack. Switch off the ignition when the vehicle has come to a stop.
-- Steer the rear axle steering into zero position. Refer to the appropriate service information .
- This is the only way to ensure that the rear axle steering is in the straight-ahead position.
-- Vehicle with air suspension: adjust to standard vehicle height and lock. Refer to Air Suspension .
-- Check the DTC memory for the Night Vision System Camera -R212-. Fix all displayed entries.
-- Move the wheels so that they are straight.
-- Install quick-action clamps on the wheels.
-- Attach the reflectors to the quick-action clamps.
-- Perform the wheel run-out compensation.
- The ACC Setting Device must not be moved on the calibration beam.
-- Select the button for the night vision system camera calibration procedure on the wheel alignment computer.
-- Position the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 so that it is centered on the calibration beam on the Setting Device - Basic Set :VAS 6430/1 .
-- When sliding the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 onto the calibration beam, the opening -arrows- must fit around the nut or bolt -A-.
-- Fold up the right and left bracket -A-.
-- Tighten the right and left clamping screw -1- hand-tight.
-- Position the Setting Device - Basic Set :VAS 6430/1 with the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 in front of the vehicle.
-- Position the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 at distance -A- from the night vision system camera.
- Distance -A- = 120 cm ± 2.5 cm (47.24 ± 0.98 in.), measured between the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 and the lens of the Night Vision System Camera -R212-.
-- Attach the measuring sensor for the front wheels to the calibration beam.
- For the following work steps, the hoist must be in the lowest position -A-.
-- Insert the Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A -arrow- into the guide on the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 and secure it.
-- Switch on the Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A .
-- Turn the lever on the back of the calibration board to align the laser beam so that it is in the center of the camera lens in the horizontal position.
TIP:
This will achieve the specified height and the Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A can be switched off.
-- Balance the bubble level -A- using the adjusting screw -1-.
TIP:
The bubble level adjustment -A- serves to balance the ground conditions.
-- Slide the Setting Device Basic Set :VAS 6430 to the side in the direction of -arrows B-, until the display in the wheel alignment computer is in the tolerance range.
-- Secure the Setting Device - Basic Set :VAS 6430 to prevent it from rolling by lightly tightening the screws -2 and 3-.
-- Turn the precision adjustment screw -1- on the calibration beam until the display on the alignment computer is located within the tolerance range.
-- Balance the bubble level -A- using the adjusting screw -1-.
-- Balance the bubble level -B- using the adjusting screw -2-.
-- Switch the Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A on again and check the specified height. Correct the height if necessary.
-- Turn the lever on the back of the calibration board to align the laser beam so that it is in the center of the camera lens in the horizontal position.
TIP:
This will achieve the specified height and the Calibration Tool - Linear Laser :VAS 6350/3A can be switched off.
-- Connect the plug -A- for the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 to the socket.
-- Switch on the switch -B- for the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 .
- The Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 performs an internal initialization after it is switched on. Both LEDs -C- blink at the same time and an acoustic tone will sound if the initialization is successful and was performed without any faults. After that, the Night Vision Calibration Tool :VAS 6430/6 will be in ready mode, which will be indicated by the green LED blinking slowly.
- Check the bubble level and correct the adjustment if necessary.
-- Press the button -A- to activate the heat function.
- An acoustic signal will sound when the heating function is activated. The heat-up phase has begun.
- As soon as the specified temperature is reached, the green LED will stay on.
- The heating elements switch off automatically after 20 minutes. An acoustic signal will sound approximately 1 minute before the heating elements switch off automatically.
- Press the button -A- at any time to reset the timer back to 20 minutes. An short acoustic signal confirms that it has be reset.
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Switch the ignition on.
-- Select and start the Diagnostic operating mode.
-- Select the Test plan tab.
-- Select the Select individual test button and select the following tree structure consecutively:
- Diagnostic-capable systems
- 0084 - Night Vision System Control Module
- 0084 - Night Vision System Control Module functions
- 0084 - Control module, calibrating
-- Start the selected program and follow the instructions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester display.
