NOTE: This Service Information bulletin replaces S.I. 12 09 88 (1719) dated May, 1989 which should be removed and discarded from your S.I. binder.

SUBJECT

Fault Code & Test Code Printout

SITUATION

Whenever faults are set in the following systems:

  1. - Engine Control Module (DME)
  2. - Electronic Throttle Control Module (EML)
  3. - Transmission Control Module (AGS):

Prior to beginning any repairs the following information needs to be printed:

  1. Fault Code(s)
  2. Fault Conditions
  3. Test/hex Code or "Diagnosis Report"

The above requested information is needed to provide BMW and its suppliers with additional information pertaining to the setting of a particular fault code. A copy of the test/hex code or "Diagnosis Report" information should be attached to all components that are replaced in order to correct any fault codes that have been set. A copy of this information should also be kept in the vehicles service file.

PROCEDURE

  1. Printout fault code:
    1. Select "4 Expert Mode".
    2. Select "4 Read Fault Memory".
    3. Select Print screen.

    Printout fault conditions:

    1. Highlight fault(s).
    2. Select ->.
    3. Select Print Screen (printout all fault conditions that are present). If multiple faults are set repeat fault conditions printout.

    Printout test/hex code or "Diagnosis Report":

    1. Return to selection menu.
    2. Select "3 Service Functions".
    3. Select "1 Test code".
    4. Select "Test Code R".
    5. Select Print "Diagnosis Report".
  2. A copy of the Test/hex code information should be attached to all components that are replaced in order to correct the fault(s).
  3. All fault codes that are encountered should be included in the Warranty Claim Comments.
