SUBJECT

Car and Key Memory Functions Change Without Request

SITUATION

When the trunk lock is set to the horizontal (Valet) position, the function of certain programmed features of Car and Key Memory changes back to the factory (default) setting. The features are restored to their programmed settings when the trunk lock is turned back to the vertical position. The features affected are:

CAUSE

Error in General Module SW 2.1

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis, replace the General Module with SW 2.2

NOTE: Remote control keys will require reinitialization after GM replacement. If possible the customer should provide all remote control keys at the time of repair.

PROCEDURE

  1. Using the DIS, or MoDiC, select Coding/Programming.
    • Select "Car Memory".
    • Select "Print List".
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to print the list of all programmed Car and Key memory features.
  2. Remove the General Module (located behind the glovebox), and replace with General Module SW 2.2.
  3. Using the DIS or MoDiC, recode the General Module.
  4. Initialize the remote control keys as follows:
    1. 4.5  Enter the vehicle and close the doors.
    2. 4.6  Briefly, (max. 5 seconds) turn the ignition on and off again.
    3. 4.7  Remove the key; press and hold the "unlock button. While holding the "unlock" button, rapidly press the "lock" button 3 times within a period of 10 seconds.
    4. 4.8  Release the "unlock" button. The LED flashes slowly for a maximum of 10 seconds.
    5. 4.9  The central locking system activates and releases all locks in rapid succession to indicate that the initialization procedure has been successful. If the LED continues to flash or the locking system fails to respond, the initialization procedure will have to be repeated.
    6. 4.10  To initialize additional remote control keys (make sure that no more than 30 seconds elapse between each initialization procedure) repeat steps 4.3 and 4.4.
NOTE: The ignition must not be cycled on/off between additional key initializations.
    7. 4.11  For information, the initialization sequence defines the numbering of the keys in the "Key Memory" program. The first key to be initialized automatically receives number one and should be labeled accordingly.
  5. Reprogram Car and Key memory using the DIS or MoDiC. Refer to the list printed in step 1, to restore any Car and Key Memory features not at factory (default) setting. For information on programming Car and Key Memory, refer to S.I. 09 03 98 .
