SUBJECT
Programming problems with CIP15.x
VEHICLES AFFECTED
E65/E66 (7 Series)
COMPLAINT 1
When connecting an E65/E66 (7 Series) produced before 09/2002 to CIP15.0 or CIP15.1 the Measures Plan shows several parts to be replaced.
COMPLAINT 2
After coding a TCU on an E65/E66 (7 Series) produced from 9/2002 with a CPT9000 telephone using CIP 15.0 or CIP 15.1, there is no hands free audio in the vehicle.
CAUSE
Software error in CIP
MEASURE 1 (VEHICLES TO 9/2002)
Do not program any of the affected vehicles using CIP15.0 or CIP15.1.
Do not replace any parts.
Once a single module has been programmed, the vehicle data status will change to a new format (E065-04-12-501) and cannot be reset with regular diagnostic tools.
In the event, that the vehicle data status has already been changed please contact your FSE to reset the vehicle data status back to 6.76C.
Use CIP13.3 to perform any Coding or Programming on the affected vehicles.
This problem will be corrected with the release of CIP 15.2 (available soon).
MEASURE 2 (VEHICLES FROM 9/2002)
Do not program/code the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) using CIP 15.0 or 15.1. Use the following procedure to update the vehicle.
- Start a new programming session using CIP 15.0 or 15.1.
- When the "Status Report" is displayed, check to see if the TCU "TEL" needs to be updated. If it does then end the session and program the TCU using CIP 13.3. Restart CIP 15.0 or 15.1
- Confirm that "TEL" is not listed in the "Status Report", and then finish the programming procedure.
- After programming is finished select "Vehicle/Complete Vehicle Encoding"
- Once you get the message that "It will take approximately 1 minute to completely encode the vehicle", disconnect the TCU 54 pin connector and 2 pin optical connector. Install an optical jumper at the 2 pin optical harness.NOTE: Failure to complete this step will result in the TCU being coded "hands free audio OFF", and with no possibility to turn it back on again.
- Finish the coding procedure.NOTE: In the final report disregard the errors that will be displayed in reference to the TCU coding.
- Check the operation of the telephone, ensuring that hands free audio is working properly.
- If the TCU was already programmed/coded using CIP 15.0 or 15.1, follow the procedure as outlined below:
- Submit a PuMA Case to the Electrical Group Hotline
- The Technical Hotline will respond via PuMA, providing you with approval to ship the TCU to BMWNA along with shipping instructions, your Center Fed-Ex account number, and you're current TCU shipping charges (one way) to Montvale.
- Ship the TCU (using Fed-Ex ONLY
) to:
Body Electrical Group Hotline
Attention: TCU Recoding
1 BMW Plaza
Montvale, NJ 07645

- Include a copy of the PuMA case inside the shipping box, along with the TCU.
- After recoding of the TCU, the Technical Hotline will ship the TCU back to your center, to the attention of the Service manager, via Fed-Ex collect.
- This problem will be corrected with the release of CIP 15.2 (available soon).
