Service Action to Recode Convertible Top Module and IHKA

MODEL

E46 (3 Series) Convertible

SITUATION

At ambient temperatures below 0°C (32°F), the convertible top does not operate when the button is pressed. Also, the IHKA heats at maximum capacity, and doesn't regulate temperature. Customers complain that the car gets too hot.

CAUSE

The instrument cluster sends an incorrect ambient temperature over the K-bus. At 0°C, the K-bus signal is -45°C.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E46 (3 Series) convertible vehicles (option 399), produced from April 8, 2002 to January 8, 2003.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Using DISPlus/GT1 loaded with DIS CD33, or later:

Recode the CVM (Convertible Top Module)
Recode the IHKA

Note 1) It is not necessary to recode the instrument cluster.

Note 2) The new coding reconfigures the CVM and IHKA so that the temperature signal below 0°C is ignored. Even after recoding and when using the DISPlus/GT1, at ambient temperatures below 0°C the temperature signal on the K-bus will be seen as -45°C.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 355. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-205) and:

emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
punch out code number 355 printed on the label and,
affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
NOTE: If this Service Action is being carried out at the same time as a Recall, or other Service Action, please maximize the use of each service action label by punching out the number(s) of all campaigns being performed on the same label. This will keep the "B" pillar as neat and uncluttered as possible

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
