BMW: All with the N63 engine
GROUP: Engine Electrical Systems

SERVICE INFORMATION

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

SUBJECT

Service Action: Program Control Units (CBS Oil Service Interval)

SITUATION

Due to previous programming errors, affected vehicles had the CBS oil service conversion performed as part of the N63 CCP campaign (SI B 11 16 14  ), but the desired interval change to 12 months/15,000 km/10,000 miles was not completed correctly.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves all vehicles with the N63 engine produced from 6/2008 to 6/2014.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

PROCEDURE

Using the latest version of ISTA/P (3.57.0  or higher):

Select "Conversion, oil service 12months/15,000km/10,000 miles"  . This adds the option "8KL"  to the vehicle order and calculates the recommended measures plan.

Add "Complete vehicle coding"  and begin the programming session.

Important note:

Many of the affected vehicles may already have the option "8KL"  in the vehicle order and so the menu option for the "Conversion, oil service 12months/15,000km/10,000 miles"  may not be listed.

If this is the situation it is only necessary to add "Complete vehicle coding"  to the measures plan in order for ISTA/P to complete the CBS oil service conversion to 12months/15,000km/10,000 miles properly.

After completing this conversion the next scheduled engine oil service is pulled ahead. If the vehicle now qualifies for this service, please refer to the "CBS Data Reset/Correction" instructions located in the Warranty Information section below.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply  (SI B 04 23 10  ).

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Defect Code: 00 12 10 04 00
Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 63 814 1 FRU No repair necessary: Programming and coding was performed previously in conjunction with another campaign or repair (vehicle is already at the specified "Target" integration level or higher, no repair is necessary) (Plus work)
Or:
00 63 815 8 FRU All Vehicles: Program and code control units (includes connecting an approved battery charger/power supply and performing a vehicle test) (Plus work)
Or:
00 63 816 9 FRU E Series vehicles only: Program and encode control units including the CAS (includes connecting an approved battery charger/power supply and performing a vehicle test) (Plus work)

Vehicle Programming and Encoding

If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code listed above.

The diagnosis and repair of vehicles "arriving" with failed control modules or stored faults which will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin.

Other Repairs

If other eligible and covered work is performed "prior" to programming and coding the vehicle, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.

CBS Data Reset/Correction

After this Engine Oil Service Retrofit is completed, a CBS Data reset and if applicable a CBS Correction must be performed.

The engine oil service interval calculation will now be based on an interval of 12 months or approximately 10,000 miles; one of the following steps should be performed:

If the engine oil service task shows  Recommended, Due or qualifies  to be performed based on the "60-day Bundling" procedure outlined SI B01 06 13 :

  • Reset the engine oil service CBS data to 100%.

If the engine oil service task does not show  Recommended, Due or does not qualify  to be performed based on the "60-day Bundling" procedure outlined SI B01 06 13 :

  • Reset the engine oil service CBS data to 100% and perform a CBS correction, in order to reduce the engine oil service counter by 1.

Engine Oil, Combined and Other Required Maintenance Service Tasks

Please be sure to perform the maintenance service tasks that are "combined with engine oil" when applicable, as well as any "stand alone" maintenance tasks that also qualify.

When eligible, claim these items under the BMW Maintenance Program, or after reviewing them with the customer and obtaining his or her approval, invoice these items separately as customer-pay.
