TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| BMW: | G12 (7 Series Sedan); Production up to June 29, 2016; With option code SA 6WB "Multifunctional instrument display" |
| GROUP: | Instruments |
SUBJECT
Head-Up Display Does not Work After Programming
SITUATION
After programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 3.57.3 or 3.58.x; one, or more, of the following situations could exist:
- The LED display of the tachometer in the instrument cluster is blacked out when door is opened and engine is running (shown below, left).
- After closing the door, tachometer will display again (shown below, right).
- The Check Control message is not displayed.
- HUD (Head-Up Display) does not work.
- No fault memory is displayed in the final report from ISTA/P or during PDI.
This affects vehicles with I-Level S15A-15-11-503 or S15A-16-03-50x.
This will not occur in vehicles produced after June 29, 2016.
CAUSE
A programming abort occurred during programming of the instrument cluster causing a software error in the instrument cluster.
CORRECTION
Manually reprogram the instrument cluster (KOMBI) control unit.
PROCEDURE
- After confirming at least one of the situation conditions exists, start a new session with ISTA/P.
- Manually select the KOMBI from the control unit list. Select programming and coding.
- After programming is complete, recheck operation and function.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger / power supply (SI B 04 23 10 ) .
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.
Manually reprogram the instrument cluster (KOMBI) control unit (with an "covered" initial programming/encoding procedure)
| Defect Code: | Refer to KSD2 | Claim with the repair and Defect Code that applies to the initial programming procedure |
| Labor Operation: | Labor Allowance: | Description: |
|---|---|---|
| 61 00 731 | Refer to KSD2 | Additional work after first termination while programming/encoding |
Or:
Manually reprogram the instrument cluster (KOMBI) control unit (stand alone repair - Vehicle returns)
| Defect Code: | 62 13 00 18 00 |
| Labor Operation: | Labor Allowance: | Description: |
|---|---|---|
| 00 00 006 | Refer to KSD2 | Performing "vehicle test" (with vehicle diagnosis system - checking faults) |
| And: | ||
| 61 21 528 | Refer to KSD2 | Connect an approved battery charger/power supply (indicated in KSD2 as "Charging battery") |
| And: | ||
| 61 00 730 | Refer to KSD2 | Programming / encoding control unit(s) |
If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Vehicle Programming and Encoding
If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code listed above.
The diagnosis and repair of vehicles "arriving" with failed control modules or stored faults which will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin.
Other Repairs
If other eligible and covered work is performed "prior" to programming and coding the vehicle, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
