SITUATION
After replacing the Front Electronic Module (FEM) for an applicable repair, programming/encoding is not possible. The ISTA short test is not able to identify the chassis number, so that "yyyyyyyyy" is displayed.
This is not based on a customer complaint.
CAUSE
Software error in the Front Electronic Module (FEM).
CORRECTION
Vehicle must be programmed with an online (IRAP session).
PROCEDURE
For such an occurrence, contact BMW of North America's Technical Service Department by submitting a PuMA case and requesting an IRAP session for remote, online programming.
NOTE:
Do not replace the FEM due to the immediate inability to program it.
