Standard Body Module (SBM) Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: To identify components on class 2 serial data line, see appropriate wiring diagram in DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Attempt to establish communications with Standard Body Module (SBM). If scan tool communicates with SBM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with SBM, go to step .
  2. Display SBM DTCs on scan tool. If any DTCs are set, go to appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. For DTC identification, see SBM DTC DEFINITIONS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are set, system is okay at this time.
  3. Attempt to establish communications with other systems along the class 2 serial data line. If scan tool communicates with other systems, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with other systems, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA LINE  .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnected SBM connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between SBM connector C2 terminal A9 (White wire) and ground. If reading is 10-15 volts, go to step  6 . If reading is not 10-15 volts, go to next step.
  5. Repair open or short to ground in White wire between SBM fuse (10-amp) located in rear fuse block and SBM. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  6. Using DVOM, measure voltage between SBM connector C2 terminal B1 (Orange wire) and ground. If reading is 10-15 volts, go to step  8 . If reading is not 10-15 volts, go to next step.
  7. Repair open or short to ground in Orange wire between SBM fuse (15-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block and SBM. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  8. Using DVOM, measure voltage between SBM connector C1 terminal C7 (Pink wire) and ground. If reading is 10-15 volts, go to step  10 . If reading is not 10-15 volts, go to next step.
  9. Repair open or short to ground in Pink wire between SBM LCM fuse (10-amp) located in underhood fuse block and SBM. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  10. Using DVOM, measure voltage between SBM connector C1 terminal C9 (Orange wire) and ground. If reading is 10-15 volts, go to step  12 . If reading is not 10-15 volts, go to next step.
  11. Repair open or short to ground in Orange wire between CSTR/SBM fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block and SBM. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  12. Using DVOM, measure voltage between SBM connector C2 terminals A9 (White wire) and A12 (Black/White wire). If reading is 10-15 volts, go to step  15 . If reading is not 10-15 volts, go to next step.
  13. Repair open in Black/White wire between SBM and ground. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  14. Replace SBM. See STANDARD BODY MODULE (SBM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  15. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Clear SBM DTCs. If DTCs clear, system is okay. If DTCs do not clear, go to appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. For DTC identification, see SBM DTC DEFINITIONS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
