Installation Procedure

  1. Measure the spark plug gap on the spark plugs to be installed. Compare the measurement to the gap specifications. Refer to Ignition System Specifications . Correct as necessary.

    NOTE: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    IMPORTANT: Always use the reinstallation torque specification when installing NEW or USED spark plugs into a USED cylinder head. Use the initial installation torque specification ONLY when installing spark plugs into a NEW cylinder head that has NOT gone through a normal engine thermal cycle.
  3. Install the spark plugs into the engine.
    1. Use this reinstallation torque specification when installing NEW or USED spark plugs into a cylinder head that has gone through a normal engine thermal cycle.

      Tighten:  Tighten the spark plug to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).

    2. Use this initial installation torque specification ONLY when installing spark plugs into a NEW cylinder head that has NOT gone through a normal engine thermal cycle.

      Tighten:  Tighten the spark plug to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).

  4. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
  5. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement (L36) or Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement (L67) in Engine Mechanical.
