Set Button
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Cadillac Allante, 1988 Cadillac Allante, and 1987 Cadillac Allante. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The cruise control SET button is located in the steering wheel. See Figure . The cruise control SET button operates as follows:
- Depressing and releasing the set button, with the car speed greater than 25 MPH and the I/P switch on, will set the car speed. Car cruise speed will be within 1 MPH of the actual speed when engaged. The system will cruise until either the OFF button on the instrument panel is pushed, the ignition switch is turned off, and/or the Set Button is pushed in fully and held. Pushing the brake pedal releases the cruise but not the resume capability.
- With the cruise speed set, fully depressing the set button can raise or lower vehicle speed. To increase car speed, the driver would accelerate to a new speed, fully depress the set button (ECM releases previously set speed) and release the button. Upon releasing the button a new speed is set. An increased control speed can also be set by the R/A (Resume/Accelerate) button as described later. To decrease cruise speed, the button is depressed, disengaging the cruise system, and allowing the throttle to return to the idle position. When the car has slowed to the desired lower cruise speed, releasing the button will re-engage the system.
- 'Tapping-down' can be done by quickly pressing the Set Button and quickly releasing it. Do not hold the button in the depressed position or the system will revert to the COAST mode. 'Tap-down' is a function in which cruise speed can be decreased by 1 MPH/1 KM/H increments (one tap = 1 MPH/1 KM/H decrease) depending on the state of the English/metric switch on the climate control driver information center. The system can 'tap-down' below the engage speed lockout (25 MPH) to 16 MPH, below this speed cruise will not operate. The accelerator may be depressed at any time to override the cruise system. Release of the accelerator will return the car to the previous set cruise speed.
