Alternator & Regulator: Description

NOTE: Article covers electronic (PCM control) portion of charging system. For bench testing and overhaul, See BENCH TESTING  in this article.

The CS144, 140-amp alternator is used along with a Powertrain Control Module (PCM). CS stands for charging system; 144 denotes the outside diameter (in millimeters) of the alternator stator laminations.

The alternator and related charging system circuitry has self-diagnostic capacity. A communication process has been incorporated between the PCM and CS144 alternator. When the alternator circuit voltage passes outside of programmed limits (10-16 volts), Code EO16 will set. The malfunction may also be indicated by the BATTERY NO CHARGE message on the telltale warning light cluster. If fault continues to exist, PCM will turn on SERVICE ENGINE SOON light.

When fault ceases, the light will go out. However, a Code EO16 will remain in PCM memory until it has been cleared. Refer to the MANUAL OPERATION OF SELF-DIAGNOSTICS  procedures under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.

The voltage regulator is enclosed in a solid mold, mounted inside the alternator. A capacitor, mounted in the end frame, protects the rectifier bridge from high voltage and suppresses radio noise.
