Auto Bleed Procedure

NOTE: Auto bleed procedure is used to provide a complete bleed procedure on ABS/TCS equipped vehicles. This procedure cycles system valves and runs the pump to purge air from circuits normally closed during non-ABS/TCS (normal) brake system operation and bleeding. This procedure should be used when air is suspected in secondary circuits or when Brake Pressure Modulator (BPM) valve has been replaced.
CAUTION: Perform MANUAL BLEEDING PROCEDURE  or PRESSURE BLEEDING PROCEDURE before performing AUTO BLEED PROCEDURE.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Inspect brake system for leaks or damage. Repair as necessary before continuing. Bleed base brake system. See MANUAL BLEEDING  or PRESSURE BLEEDING.
  2. Ensure battery is fully charged. Connect Tech 1 to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Select F4: MISC TEST and then F4: AUTO BLEED. Press ENTER. Tests will be performed to determine Anti-Lock Brake System/Traction Control System (ABS/TCS) system condition. If no faults are detected, go to step 5). If faults are detected, bleed procedure will be aborted, go to next step.
  3. If Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) (DTCs) are present, Tech 1 will display DTCS PRESENT, or list DTCs depending on when DTCs were set. Select F2: DTC CODES to display or clear codes.
  4. If DTC(s) are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC CODE CHARTS . If bleed procedure was aborted but no DTCs are set, perform system functional check. See ABS/TCS FUNCTIONAL CHECK  CHARTS. Repair ABS/TCS system as necessary before continuing.
  5. Install Bleeder Adapter (J-35589) to brake master cylinder. Pressurize bleeder to 30 psi (2.1 kg/cm2 ) minimum. Connect bleeder hose to adapter, and bleed air from adapter.
  6. Have an assistant continuously pump brake pedal, making long, steady strokes. Press UP on Tech 1. Place proper size box end wrench over left rear bleeder valve. Attach one end of clear tube over valve and submerge other end in container partially filled with clean brake fluid.
  7. Loosen left rear bleeder valve. Press ENTER. Tighten bleeder valve when prompted by Tech 1. Press UP on Tech 1. After left rear caliper bleed is complete, press UP on Tech 1. Repeat steps 6) and 7) for right rear caliper.
  8. Move to right front caliper, loosen bleeder screw, press ENTER. Have an assistant continuously pump brake pedal, making long, steady strokes. Press UP on Tech 1. Press and hold brake pedal for 10 seconds when prompted (Tech 1 will display timer). Release brake when prompted, wait 10 seconds.
  9. Previous step will repeat 3 times. Tighten bleeder screw when prompted. Press UP on Tech 1. Right front bleed procedure is complete. Press UP on Tech 1. Repeat steps 8) and 9) for left front caliper. Tech 1 will now perform several tests to verify system operation.
  10. If Tech 1 displays BLEED PROCEDURE COMPLETE, press UP and go to next step. If faults are detected, remove pressure bleeding equipment and go to step 3).
  11. Relieve bleed pressure. Press UP on Tech 1. Remove pressure bleeding equipment. Ensure brake pedal is high and firm. If brake pedal is not high and firm, reinspect brake system for leaks or damage. If brake system is okay and pedal travel is still excessive, repeat auto bleed procedure.
