Installation Procedure

NOTE: If a service replacement steering column is being installed, do not remove the anti-rotation pin until after the column has been connected to the steering gear. Removing the anti-rotation pin before the column is connected to the steering gear may damage the SIR coil.
  1. Install the steering column while carefully aligning into the lower steering coupler.

  3. Hand-start the following components:
    • The rear support bracket bolt
    • The forward support strap nut
    • A new forward support shear-bolt
  4. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  5. Tighten  the following components:
    • Tighten the rear support bracket bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
    • Tighten the forward support strap nut to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
    • Tighten the new forward support shear-bolt to 21 N.m (15 lb ft).

  7. Install the coupler/steering column shaft connection bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).

  8. Install the sound insulator.
  9. Install the I/P driver knee bolster energy absorber.
  10. Install the turn signal switch. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .
  11. Install the windshield washer switch. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .
  12. Install the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .

  14. Install the immobilizer.
  15. Connect the immobilizer connector.
  16. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle .
  17. Install the SIR coil. Refer to SIR COIL ASSEMBLY in Restraints article.
  18. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  19. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to INSTALLATION in Restraints article.
  20. Enable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in Restraints article.
