Engine Controls Diagnostic System Check
CAUTION:
DO NOT perform diagnostic system check if there is not a driveability concern, unless another procedure directs you to this diagnostic procedure. Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding. Unless a diagnostic procedure instructs you, DO NOT clear DTCs. Ensure battery is fully charged before proceeding.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, on hood release bracket. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, perform TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD). If scan tool communicates with PCM, EBCM and VTD, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, EBCM and VTD, perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start, repair as necessary. See appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs functions for PCM, ECBM and VTD. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, go to step 9 .
- Using scan tool, save or capture PCM DTC information, store information, then go to next step.
- If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with "U", perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If scan tool does not display DTCs P0602, P0603, P0604, P0606 or P1621, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs P0602, P0603, P0604, P0606 or P1621, repair engine performance concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- If scan tool displays DTCs P0560, P0562, P0563, P0621 or P0622, repair engine performance concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If scan tool does not display DTCs P0560, P0562, P0563, P0621 or P0622, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
- If concern is not automatic transmission related, go to next step. If concern is automatic transmission related, perform appropriate diagnostic system check. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- If concern is not with Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing, go to next step. If concern is with I/M testing, perform inspection/maintenance system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Inspect for driveability symptoms, such as hard to start, surges, lack of power, etc. If driveability symptom exists, perform appropriate test. See appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If driveability symptom does not exist, problem is intermittent. See TROUBLE SHOOTING .
