Condition

Some customers may comment that the "Side Blind Zone System Unavailable" message displays on the DIC. They may also state that this message will be displayed when no obvious blockage is on the rear outside fascia.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the side blind zone alert module falsely detecting an object present. This is being caused by the module software detecting that there is an object in its field of view when there is nothing present.

Correction

Verify none of the following concerns were present when the message was displayed:

If none of the above concerns were present, then reprogram the side blind zone alert module with the latest software calibration.

IMPORTANT: Select the correct calibration files for the appropriate vehicle configuration (body style) and RPO codes. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully. Prior to reprogramming, turn the ignition OFF and open and close the driver's door.

A revised calibration has been developed to address this condition. Technicians are to reprogram the side blind zone alert module using the Service Programming System (SPS) with the latest software available on TIS2WEB. Refer to the SPS procedures in SI.

IMPORTANT: At the SPS programming, select "Programming Process" and then select "Replace and Program ECU".

When using a Tech 2® or a multiple diagnostic interface (MDI) for reprogramming, ensure that it is updated with the latest software version.

During programming, the battery voltage must be maintained within the proper range of 12-15 volts. Only use the approved Midtronics® PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool EL-49642) or equivalent during programming.
