Fuel Pump Replacement

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Relieve fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Remove the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement .
  3. Remove the plenum front panel. Refer to Plenum Front Panel Replacement .
  4. Remove the outer fuel pump insulator. Refer to Fuel Pump Insulator Replacement (Inner) Fuel Pump Insulator Replacement (Outer) .
  5. Remove the fuel pump cover. Refer to Fuel Pump Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the inner fuel pump insulator. Refer to Fuel Pump Insulator Replacement (Inner) Fuel Pump Insulator Replacement (Outer) .
  7. Remove the fuel pump feed pipe. Refer to Fuel Feed Pipe Replacement .
  8. Remove the fuel feed intermediate pipe. Refer to Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe Replacement . Replace with a NEW fuel feed intermediate pipe.

1 Fuel Pump Fasteners (Qty: 2)
CAUTION:

Alternately hand-tighten the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully seated. Trying to draw down the pump without even side-to-side tightening may result in pump plunger damage.

Procedure

  1. Add thread locker to the fuel pump fastener threads prior to installing the NEW bolts. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  2. Tighten
    1. First Pass: 8 N.m (71 lb in)
    2. Final Pass: + 50 Degrees
2 Fuel Pump Gasket
NOTE:

Install a NEW fuel pump gasket. Ensure the fuel pump housing gasket is properly aligned with the tab upward at the 2 O'clock position.
3 Fuel Pump
NOTE:

To aid installation of the fuel pump, rotate the engine so that the fuel pump lobe of the intake cam is at it's lowest point. Use the EN-50790  alignment gauge to ensure that the camshaft lobe is in the base circle position. At the base circle position, the tool will be flush with the head. Lubricate the high pressure fuel pump cylinder head bore with clean engine oil.

4 Valve Lifter Follower
NOTE:

The valve lifter follower may slide out of the cylinder head upon fuel pump removal.
