Engine Idle COMPENSATOR
The compensator is thermostatically controlled air bleed which supplies additional air to the idle mixture to prevent engine stalling at idle during prolonged hot weather operation. On vehicles with a one-barrel carburetor, the compensator is located in the body of the carburetor. On all other vehicles, the compensator is threaded info a manifold fitting below the carburetor.
All compensators are factory set and are nonadjustable. Service is by replacement only. If engine idle is erratic, hold the compensator valve closed with a pencil or wooden dowel while adjusting the idle mixture screws.
