Clutch Release

  1. Start engine and apply brakes. Depress clutch pedal until it is about 1/2" (12.7 mm) from floor mat. Shift back and forth between 1st and Reverse. If shifts are smooth, clutch is working properly. If shifts are not smooth, clutch is not releasing fully.
  2. Check pedal bushings for sticking or excessive wear. Check clutch release fork is properly installed on ball stud in bellhousing. Fork can pull off ball stud if not properly lubricated. Check cross shaft levers and support bracket for bends, cracks or damage.
  3. Check condition of engine mounts, as worn mounts allow engine to move and cause binding in linkage at cross shaft. Make sure that ball studs, both mount brackets and cross shaft all have some clearance between one another.
  4. Make sure there is some clearance between spring fingers of release fork and front bearing retainer of transmission. If there is no clearance, fork may be installed on stud incorrectly. Worn clutch disc will also cause lack of clearance.
