Trouble Shooting: Backfire

  1. Perform compression test and check for sticking or leaking valves. Check for open EGR using CHART C-7 or CHART C-7A. See COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL SYSTEM in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Check for faulty or loose fit of EGR gasket.
  2. Check for proper valve timing. Check ignition coil output voltage. Check for cross-fire between spark plugs, distributor cap, spark plug wires and proper spark plug wire routing.
  3. Check for intermittent condition in ignition system. Check ignition timing. Check for faulty spark plugs, plug wires or boots. Check deceleration valve (Manual transmission equipped vehicles only).
