Off-Board Programming

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 GMC Safari and 2001 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Obtain VIN of vehicle for which PCM is being programmed.
  2. With Techline(R) terminal, select Service Programming.
  3. Select Tech 2(R), Reprogram ECU, and Off-Board Programming Adapter as electronic control unit (ECU) location.
  4. Connect PCM, Off-Board Programming Adapter, and Tech 2(R) as described on Techline(R) terminal. Ensure you use correct harness connector from Off-Board Programming Adapter kit.
  5. With Tech 2(R), select Service Programming Request Information function. Tech 2(R) communicates with control module and receives access code.
  6. With Tech 2(R), exit Service Programming Request Information.
  7. Disconnect Tech 2(R) from Off-Board Programming Adapter.
  8. Connect Tech 2(R) to Techline(R) terminal.
  9. Turn ON Tech 2(R).
  10. With Techline(R) terminal, enter VIN of vehicle that will be receiving control module.
  11. Techline(R) terminal will display message, attaching to database.
  12. Identify what type of programming that you are performing.
  13. Select appropriate calibration file.
  14. Ensure all connections are secure.
  15. Techline(R) terminal displays a summary screen that summarizes your selections. After confirming you choices, Techline(R) terminal automatically loads calibration files to Tech 2(R).
  16. After download is complete, turn off Tech 2(R).
  17. Disconnect Tech 2(R) from Techline(R) terminal.
  18. Connect Tech 2(R) to Off-Board Programming Adapter.
  19. With Tech 2(R), select Service Programming.
    NOTE: DO NOT turn off Off-Board Programming Adapter if programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure PCM and Off-Board Programming Adapter connections are secure and Techline(R) operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram PCM. If control module cannot be programmed, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  20. With Tech 2(R), select Program.
  21. After download is complete, exit Service Programming.
  22. Turn off, Off-Board Programming Adapter.
