Anti-Lock Brake System Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 GMC Safari and 2001 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) may be referred to as 4 Wheel Anti-Lock (4WAL-3). ABS operation is controlled by Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
NOTE: Presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module on class 2 serial data circuit is not communicating.

Anti-lock brake system diagnostic system check is an organized approach to identify problems associated with EBCM. This check must be starting point for any EBCM complaint, and will direct you to next logical step in diagnosing complaint. EBCM is a very reliable component and is not likely cause of malfunction. Most system complaints are linked to faulty wiring, connectors, and occasionally to components. Understanding ABS system and using procedures correctly will reduce diagnostic time and prevent unnecessary parts replacement.

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST E: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Body Control Module (BCM), Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules, go to TEST D: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCS function and retrieve any BCM, EBCM, IPC and PCM DTCs. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair ABS by symptom. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  4. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with a "U", or either DTC C0292 or DTC C0297, go to TEST D: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If scan tool displays DTC P0500, P0562, P0563, P0601, P0602, P0603, P0604, P0605, P1621, or P1381. Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1367 see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console. If scan tool displays any other DTCs, perform appropriate repair. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
