Powertrain Control Module Diagnostic System Check
NOTE:
Check for any applicable technical service bulletins before performing this procedure. DO NOT perform this procedure if driveability conditions are not present. DO NOT turn ignition switch to LOCK position unless directed to do so. DO NOT clear DTCs unless directed to do so.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is not illuminated, repair MIL as necessary. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, near steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to display Powertrain Control Module (PCM) data. If PCM data is displayed, go to next step. If PCM data is not displayed, perform TEST D: DATA LINK CONNECTOR DIAGNOSIS under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and continues to run, go to next step. If engine does not start, or starts and stalls, go to NO START DIAGNOSIS in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTC function for PCM. If no DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If any DTCs are displayed, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTCs retrieved. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Compare PCM data values displayed on scan tool to typical engine scan data values. If values are within limits, system is okay. If values are not within limits, perform appropriate test for component that values are not within limits. See appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
NOTE:
If any DTC are displayed in this step, record freeze frame data.
