Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Sensing & Diagnostic Module: Notes

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
WARNING: If any water enters vehicle's interior up to carpet level or higher and soaks carpet, Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) and harness connector may need to be replaced. Remove all water and repair water damage. Moisture could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs.
WARNING: When handling SDM, DO NOT strike or jolt SDM. Before applying power to SDM:
  • Remove any dirt, grease, etc. from mounting surface.
  • Ensure SDM mounting surface is dry.
  • Position SDM horizontally on mounting surface.
  • Point arrow on SDM toward front of vehicle.
  • Tighten all SDM and SDM bracket fasteners to specified torque value. Failure to follow correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury or unnecessary SIR repairs.
