Theft Deterrent Control Module

Vehicles with steering column mounted ignition switches have exciter integral with theft deterrent control module which is located within steering column. Vehicles with instrument panel mounted ignition switches have exciter modules separate from theft deterrent control module, with vehicle wiring harness connecting both. Theft deterrent control module for vehicles with instrument panel mounted ignition switches is located within instrument panel. Theft deterrent control module can learn up to 10 keys (transponder values). Theft deterrent control module uses these following inputs: battery voltage, ignition switched voltage and ground circuit. Theft deterrent control module uses these following outputs, password exchange with PCM (fuel enable/disable) through class 2 serial data circuit.

When an ignition key is inserted into ignition lock cylinder, transponder embedded in head of key is energized by exciter coils surrounding ignition lock cylinder. An energized transponder transmits a signal that contains its value, which is received by theft deterrent control module. Theft deterrent control module then compares this value to a value stored in memory and performs one of the following functions:

If PCM is unable to communicate with theft deterrent control module such as a loss of class 2 State Of Health (SOH), after vehicle is started, theft deterrent control module will consider itself malfunctioning and enter a fail enable state. SECURITY indicator will illuminate. Vehicle will not stall or stop running. If PCM is in a fail enable state, when ignition switch is turned to OFF position, it will remain fail enabled until next time vehicle is started. If PCM is fail enabled, theft deterrent system is not active, and vehicle will start. PCM will remain fail enabled until class 2 communication with theft deterrent control module is restored.
