Removal & Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 GMC Safari and 2001 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Electronic components used in control systems are designed to carry very low voltages. As little as a 30-volt charge created by static electricity can cause a total or degrading failure in PCM or other electronic components containing integrated circuits. Before servicing PCM, technician must ground himself and work area to discharge static electricity.
CAUTION:
DO NOT remove part from packaging until ready to install. Ground any static-proof package before opening. DO NOT touch electrical terminals of components unless properly grounded. DO NOT lay electrical components on car seat, carpeting or dashboard. Use electrostatic protection mat and ground strap whenever possible.
CAUTION:
Use correct fastener in correct location. Replacement fasteners must be correct part number for application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in service procedures. DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage fastener. Use correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to part and systems.
WARNING:
Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
NOTE:
Before replacing PCM, carefully inspect all wiring and control components. Failure to test for short circuits may result in repeated PCM failure due to shorts and Quad-Driver failure. To prevent internal damage to PCM, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position when connecting or disconnecting PCM harness connectors or any electrical components.
- Disconnect PCM harness connectors (4). See Fig 1 .
- Release spring latch (3) from PCM (1).
- Lift PCM from PCM mounting tray (2). See Fig 2 .
- Remove PCM (1) from engine compartment.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Connect PCM connectors (4) to PCM (1). See Fig 1 . Gently tighten down fasteners to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
- Perform set up procedure on PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE/PROGRAMMING ON BOARD and POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE/PROGRAMMING OFF BOARD under PROGRAMMING.
