Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

    CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disable the SIR System. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 .
  2. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  4. Note the mark on the steering shaft and the steering wheel to ensure proper alignment during installation.
  5. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  7. On vehicles with a tilt column, pull the tilt lever straight out from the steering column.
  8. Remove the tilt lever assembly.

  10. Remove 2 TORX® head screws (1) from the lower shroud (2).
  11. Remove the lower shroud (2).

  13. Remove 2 TORX® head screws (2) from the upper shroud (1).
  14. Remove the upper shroud (1).

  16. Remove the wire harness straps from the steering wheel column wire harness.
  17. Remove the instrument panel trim pad. Refer to Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  18. Disconnect the SIR harness from the back of the fuse panel.
  19. Remove the retaining ring (3).
  20. Remove the SIR coil (4) from the steering shaft.
  21. If replacing, discard the SIR coil.
