Circuit/System Testing

NOTE:

If equipped, the following tests can be performed at an inline connector. See schematics for the corresponding terminals to test at.

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the fuel level sensor.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal C and ground.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  3. Ignition ON, install a J33431-C  Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit and the low reference circuit. Vary the signal generator resistance between 40-250 Ω. Verify that the scan tool Fuel Tank Level Remaining parameter displays a range that varies between 5-95 percent as the signal generator resistance changes.
    • If not displaying the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the ECM.
  4. Vary the signal generator resistance between 40-250 Ω. Verify that the fuel gauge displays a range that varies between empty and full as the signal generator resistance changes.
    • If the fuel gauge is incorrect, replace the instrument panel cluster (IPC).
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the fuel level sensor.
