Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining .
    WARNING: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
    WARNING: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning .
  2. Disconnect the evaporative emission and fuel pipe connectors (1). Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .

  3. Loosen the hose clamps (2) and slide the filler tube away from the fuel tank.
  4. Disconnect the fuel tank harness electrical connector (3).
  5. Remove the rear coil springs. Refer to Rear Spring, Insulator and Jounce Bumper Replacement .
  6. Reinstall the shock fasteners (1) to the shock without the coil spring.

  7. Support the rear axle with a suitable jack stand.

  8. Remove the right lower wheel liner fasteners (1).
  9. Remove and DISCARD the right rear axle bushing nuts (2) and bolts (3).
  10. Reposition the rear axle (1) rearward and up.

  11. Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack.

  12. Remove the fuel tank strap bolts (1) and reposition the fuel tank straps toward the back of the vehicle.
  13. Remove the fuel tank (1).

  14. If replacing the tank, remove the fuel tank fuel pump. Refer to Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement .
