Pressure Test

NOTE: Before testing power steering system, check fluid level, belt tension, pump pulley, and engine idle sped. DO NOT  use automatic transmission fluid.
  1. Disconnect high pressure hose at steering gear and connect free end of hose to gauge side of Tester (C-3309E). Connect a second pressure hose from valve side of garage to steering gear. Valve must be installed on other side of gauge.
  2. Insert Thermometer in fluid reservoir, start engine and warm up fluid to 150-170F (66-77C). Turning wheels from stop to stop will air in warming fluid. DO NOT  hold wheels against stop.
  3. With engine at idle speed, gauge open, record maximum pressure while turning steering wheel from stop to stop. The minimum pressure at idle should read 80-125 psi (5.6-8.8 kg/cm2 ) on RWD models, and 30-50 psi (2.1-3.5 kg/cm2 ) on FWD models.
  4. If pressure is under specifications, steering system is not functioning properly. To determine which unit is faulty, momentarily close pressure gauge valve and note maximum pressure registered on gauge.
  5. If pressure reads less than maximum pressure; 1200-1`300 psi (87.7-91.4 kg/cm2 ) on RWD models, or 1000-1100 psi 970.3-77.3 kg/cm2 ) on FWS models, the pump is faulty and should be reconditioned.
  6. If pressure read low at step 3) but not at step 4), steering gear is at fault. When removing test equipment, ensure original hose position to avoid interference with engine or sheet metal.
