Instrument Cluster Test 3C - Tachometer Not Operating Properly

NOTE: Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 1A before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER section in this article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS at the end of article. Perform TEST VER-1A after each repair.

CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.

Using scan tool, select ENGINE, then SENSOR DISPLAYS. Select ENGINE RPM. If tachometer reading is more than 100 RPM, go to next step. Using scan tool, actuate instrument cluster gauges. Tachometer should move to 6000 RPM mark, then in steps should move to 3000, 1000, zero RPM marks. If tachometer functions as described, replace BCM. If tachometer does not function correctly, go to next step.
Remove instrument cluster and access back of gauges. Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance diagonally across tachometer terminals. If resistance is 200-220 ohms, replace instrument cluster circuit board. If resistance is not 200-220 ohms, replace tachometer.
