Fuel Pump Module: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Dodge Intrepid, 2003 Chrysler Intrepid, 2003 Chrysler Concorde, and 2003 Chrysler 300M. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The fuel pump module contains the fuel pump, fuel reservoir, level sensor, inlet sensor, inlet strainer, and fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pump module is suspended in fuel, mounted to the top of the fuel tank. See Fig 1.

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Fuel tank must be removed for servicing of fuel pump module. Remove fuel tank. See FUEL TANK .
    WARNING: The fuel reservoir of the fuel pump module does not empty out when the tank is drained. The fuel in the reservoir will spill out when the module is removed.
  2. Ensure area around fuel pump module is clean. Disconnect fuel line from fuel pump module by depressing quick connect retainers with thumb and forefinger. Slide fuel pump module electrical connector lock to unlock.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connection from the fuel pump module by pushing down on connector retainer and pulling connector off of module.
  4. Using Fuel Pump Module Lock Nut Spanner Wrench (6856), remove fuel pump module lock nut. See Fig 2. Reservoir on fuel pump module may still contain some gasoline. Remove fuel pump module from fuel tank. Remove "O" ring from sealing area on shoulder of fuel tank.
