Checking Speed Control Operation
NOTE:
Perform this test only if there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). After repair, perform TEST VER-4A
under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Turn ignition off. Inspect throttle cable and linkage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If throttle is binding or damaged, repair as necessary.
- Start engine. Allow to idle for one minute. Disconnect vacuum supply line at S/C servo. See Figure . If vacuum exists, go to next step. If vacuum does not exist, repair as necessary.
- Road test vehicle at speeds more than 35 MPH. Attempt to set cruise control. Using scan tool, check S/C DENIED status. If no status denied message exists, go to next step. If any status denied message exists, go to step 5
. See SCAN TOOL DENIED STATUS
table.SCAN TOOL DENIED STATUS

Using scan tool, select INPUTS/OUTPUTS and PARK NEUTRAL POSIT. Move shifter to Drive position. If scan tool displays D/R, go to next step. If scan tool does not display D/R, diagnose and repair park neutral position switch. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 3-pin cruise control switch harness connector. Remove ASD relay, located in PDC. Connect a jumper wire between relay connector terminals E1 and E5. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between switch harness connector terminal No. 3 (Red/Light Green wire) and ground. If voltage is 6 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair short to voltage on Red/Light Green wire between switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 7-pin clockspring connector (column side). Disconnect PCM connectors, located behind master cylinder. Check resistance of Red/Light Green wire between clockspring harness connector terminal No. 6 and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 41. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open on Red/Light Green wire between clockspring and PCM.
- Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe clockspring harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open on Black/Light Green wire between clockspring harness connector and ground, located on center instrument panel brace.
- Check resistance of Black/Light Green wire between clockspring terminal No. 7 and switch harness connector terminal No. 1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace clockspring.
- Connect PCM, switch and clockspring connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check S/C SWITCH voltage. Turn ignition off. Disconnect clockspring connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, recheck S/C SWITCH voltage. If voltage did not change to 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage changed to 5 volts, replace clockspring.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM and switch connectors. Check resistance between switch harness connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 3 (Red/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short between circuits.
- Check resistance between switch harness connector terminal No. 3 (Red/Light Green wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Red/Light Green wire.
- Connect all components. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check S/C switch voltage while pressing switch. See S/C SWITCH VOLTAGE table. If voltage is as specified, test is complete. If voltage is not as specified, replace switch.
