Fuel Level Sending Unit Inoperative
NOTE:
Fuel level sending unit may also be referred to as fuel level sensor. Fuel level sending unit is mounted on fuel pump module and can be serviced separately from fuel pump module. Fuel pump module may also be referred to as fuel tank module.
NOTE:
After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST
under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Turn ignition off, wait 15 seconds then turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs. If DTC does not reset, go to step 6 . If DTC resets, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump module Light Gray 4-pin connector located in center rear of trunk. Using a test light connected to ground, probe Dark Blue wire at fuel pump module harness connector. BCM sends out a low current 12-volt signal to fuel pump module. Test light should not illuminate. If test light illuminates, repair short to voltage in Dark Blue wire between fuel pump module and BCM. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of both Black wires at fuel pump module harness connector. If both resistance reading are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in appropriate Black wire between fuel pump module and ground.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select BODY COMPUTER then SENSORS. Observe FUEL SENSOR. Observe scan tool and connect a jumper wire between ground and Dark Blue wire at fuel pump module harness connector. If fuel sensor voltage is less than .5 volt, replace fuel level sending unit. If fuel sensor voltage is .5 volt or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Ensure fuel pump module is disconnected. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Gray C4 26-pin connector. BCM is connected to junction block under left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance of Dark Blue wire between fuel pump module harness connector and terminal No. 22 at BCM C4 harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue wire.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Perform a wiggle test on all related wiring harnesses and connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair wiring as necessary.
