Horns Fails To Sound

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform VTSS VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, activate horn relay. If horn does not sound, go to step  6 . If horn sounds, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, select INPUT/OUTPUTS and observe HORN SW status while pressing horn pad on steering wheel. If scan tool displays HORN: CLOSED, replace Body Control Module (BCM). If scan tool does not display, HORN SW: CLOSED, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off, disconnect negative battery cable and wait for 2 minutes before proceeding. Disconnect and remove air bag module from steering wheel. Disconnect horn switch. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between ground and horn switch sense circuit at horn harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. Using scan tool, observe HORN SW status. If scan tool displays HORN: CLOSED, replace horn switch. If scan tool does not display, HORN SW: CLOSED, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect clockspring connector in steering column. Connect a jumper wire between ground and Black/Red wire at clockspring harness connector. Using scan tool, observe HORN SW status. If scan tool displays HORN: CLOSED, replace clockspring. If scan tool does not display, HORN SW: CLOSED, go to next step
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) C1 16-pin connector. BCM is connected to junction block under left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance of Black/Red wire between clockspring harness connector and terminal No. 2 at BCM C1 harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Red wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM.
  6. Press horn relay and heck horn relay operation by listening for relay clicking noise. Horn relay is located in junction block. Junction block is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . If horn relay clicks, go to next step. If horn relay does not click, go to step  12 .
  7. Remove horn relay from junction block. Connect a jumper wire between battery voltage and terminal No. 10 at horn relay socket in junction block. See Figure . If horn sounds, replace horn relay. If horn did not sound, go to next step.
  8. Remove jumper wire. Disconnect junction block Natural C2 10-pin connector. See Figure . Connect a jumper wire between battery voltage and terminal No. 8 (Dark Green/Red wire) at junction block C2 connector. If horn sounds, replace junction block. If horn does not sound, go to next step.
  9. Ensure jumper wire is still connected. Disconnect horn connectors. Measure voltage between ground and Dark Green/Red wire at each horn harness connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts at both terminals, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less at any terminal, repair open in appropriate Dark Green/Red wire between horn and junction block.
  10. Disconnect jumper wire. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at each horn harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms at both terminals, replace horn(s). If resistance is 5 ohms or more at any terminal, repair open in appropriate Black wire between horn and ground.
  11. Remove and inspect fuse No. 8 (20-amp) in junction block. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is blown check for cause of fuse to blow. Repair wiring as necessary and replace fuse.
  12. Temporarily remove headlight delay relay from junction block. See Figure . Reinstall headlight delay relay in place of horn relay. Using scan tool, activate horn relay. If horn sounds while actuating horn relay, replace horn relay relay. If horn does not sound, reinstall headlight delay relay in headlight relay socket and go to next step.
  13. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 6 and 8 at horn relay socket in junction block. If battery voltage is not present at any terminal, replace junction block. If battery voltage is present at both terminals, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Remove BCM from junction block. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a jumper wire between terminals No. 6 and 7 at horn relay socket in junction block. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 7 at BCM-to-junction block 12-pin connector. See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block.
  15. Disconnect jumper wire. Reinstall horn relay. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 7 at BCM-to-junction block 12-pin connector. See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace BCM. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace horn relay.
