Speedometer Not Operating Properly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, 2002 Dodge Ram Van, 2001 Dodge Ram Wagon, and 2001 Dodge Ram Van. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Possible Causes:

  1. Instrument Cluster
  2. Engine Trouble Codes
  3. Pinion Factor Setting
  4. Instrument Cluster (Inaccurate Speedometer)

Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Push and hold trip/odometer reset button while turning ignition switch to RUN position. Release trip/odometer reset button to start self-test. Observe speedometer. Speedometer should reach specified calibration points. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CALIBRATION POINTS  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If speedometer reaches specified calibration points, go to next step. If speedometer does not reach specified calibration points, replace electro-mechanical instrument cluster. See ELECTRO-MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Using scan tool, read ENGINE DTCs. If no engine DTCs are present, go to next step. If any engine DTCs are present, perform appropriate test(s) in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Raise and support all wheels. Start engine and place gear selector in Drive. Using scan tool, observe vehicle speed. If vehicle speed on scan tool matches speedometer, check for proper pinion factor setting (number of tone wheel teeth out of range) and tire calibration (tire revolutions per mile out of range). See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If vehicle speed on scan tool does not match speedometer, replace electro-mechanical instrument cluster. See ELECTRO-MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
