42RLE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Removal

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Mark propeller shaft (1) and the transmission flange (4) for assembly alignment. See Fig 1.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the rear propeller shaft coupler (3) to the transmission flange (4).
- Slide the propeller shaft (1) rearward until the coupler clears the propeller shaft pilot (5) on the transmission output shaft.
1 - STARTER 2 - BOLTS 3 - CLOSEOUT PLATE - Remove the bolts (2) holding the starter motor (1) to the transmission. (Refer to ELECTRICAL/STARTING/STARTER MOTOR - REMOVAL)
- Remove the starter (1) from the transmission starter pocket and safely relocate. See Fig 2.
1 - ACCESS COVER 2 - BOLT - Remove the bolt (2) holding the torque converter access cover (1) to the transmission, 3.5L engines. See Fig 3.
- Remove the torque converter access cover (1) from the transmission.
1 - ENGINE OIL PAN 2 - STRUCTURAL COVER 3 - HORIZONTAL BOLTS 4 - VERTICAL BOLTS - Remove the structural collar bolts (3, 4) and structural collar (2) on vehicles equipped with 2.7L engines. See Fig 4. (Refer to ENGINE - 2.7L/ENGINE BLOCK/STRUCTURAL COVER - REMOVAL)
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - ENGINE OIL PAN 3 - BOLTS - Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts (1) are accessible. See Fig 5. Then remove bolts (1) one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
1 - GEARSHIFT CABLE 2 - SUPPORT BRACKET 3 - MANUAL LEVER - Disconnect the gearshift cable (1) from the transmission manual valve lever (3). See Fig 6.
- Loosen the bolts holding the shift cable retaining strap (2) to the transmission.
- Remove the shift cable (1) from the transmission.

1 - INPUT SPEED SENSOR 2 - OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR 3 - TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR - Disconnect wires from the input (1) and output (2) speed sensors. See Fig 7.
- Disconnect wires from the transmission range sensor (3). See Fig 7.
1 - SOLENOID/PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY CONNECTOR - Disconnect wires from the solenoid/pressure switch assembly (1). See Fig 8.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor. (Refer to FUEL SYSTEM/FUEL INJECTION/CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - REMOVAL)
1 - TRANSMISSION 2 - TRANSMISSION FILL TUBE 3 - BOLT - Remove the bolt (3) holding the transmission fill tube (2) to the transmission (1). See Fig 10.
- Remove the transmission fill tube (2).
1 - TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINES 2 - COOLER LINE FITTINGS 3 - SUPPORT CLAMPS - Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at transmission fittings (2) and clips (3). See Fig 11.
- Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
- Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
- Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
- Remove bolts (2) securing rear support and cushion (3) to transmission crossmember (1). See Fig 12.
- Remove bolts attaching crossmember (1) to frame and remove crossmember.
1 - BOLTS 2 - ENGINE OIL PAN 3 - TRANSMISSION - Remove the bolts (1) holding the engine oil pan (2) to the transmission (3). See Fig 13.
1 - ENGINE 2 - BOLTS 3 - TRANSMISSION - Remove all remaining bolts (2) holding the engine (1) to the transmission (3). See Fig 14.
- Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
- Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
- To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
