Ch-1 Test - Charging System Code Check

  1. Connect diagnostic read-out box to diagnostic connector in engine compartment. Turn ignition on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds. Record all codes. Erase fault codes. See ERASING CODES FROM SMEC MEMORY  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS in this article. Start engine and allow to idle for 7 minutes. Raise engine speed above 1500 RPM for 30 seconds. Stop engine. Turn ignition on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds. Record all codes.

  2. If same code(s) were stored before and after memory was cleared, problem still exists. If a code does not reappear after engine is started, problem no longer exists, but was intermittent. Go to step 5). If code 88-12-55 is stored (no codes stored), proceed to CH-2 TEST - CHECKING BATTERY TEMPERATURE SENSOR CALIBRATION  . If code 88-11-12-16-55 is stored, proceed to CHARGING SYSTEM TEST NO. 3. If codes 88-12-41-46-55 or 88-12-46-55 are stored, proceed to CH-4 TEST - ALTERNATOR OUTPUT HIGH (CODE 46 OR CODES 41-46)  . 3) If codes 88-12-41-55, 88-12-41-47-55, or 88-12-47-55 are stored, proceed to CH-5 TEST - ALTERNATOR OUTPUT LOW (CODE 41, 41/47 OR CODE 47)  . If there is no code 88, ensure diagnostic read-out box is operating properly and that there is not an open circuit between SMEC and diagnostic connector. 4) The majority of intermittent failures are caused by wiring and connectors. The only way to locate intermittents is to try to duplicate the problem. Because the SMEC can remember where the fault is located, the ATM and Sensor Test modes can be used to try to locate the intermittents. 5) If code 41 does not reappear after clearing memory, enter ATM Test Mode "09" on diagnostic read-out box. See ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS in this article. Connect voltmeter to field control wire terminal of alternator and watch pulsations of meter. Once in correct test mode, wiggle all connectors and wires in the circuit. When bad connection or wire is located, ATM Test Mode "09" will be interrupted. 6) If code 16 does not reappear after clearing memory, enter Sensor Test Mode "07" on diagnostic read-out box. See ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS  under TESTING & DIAGNOSIS in this article. Once in correct test mode, wiggle all connectors and wires in the circuit. When bad connection or wire is located, diagnostic read-out box display will change.
