Speedometer Gauge Not Operating Properly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon and 2000 Dodge Ram Van. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS after each repair.
  1. Turn ignition off. Push and hold trip/odometer reset button while turning ignition switch to RUN position. Release trip/odometer reset button to start self-test. Observe speedometer. Speedometer should reach following calibration points: "0", 20, 55, then 120. If speedometer reaches specified calibration points, go to next step. If speedometer does not reach specified calibration points, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - RAM VAN & RAM WAGON article.
  2. Using scan tool, read ENGINE DTCs. If any engine DTCs are present, perform appropriate test(s) in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no engine DTCs are present, go to next step.
  3. Raise and support all wheels. Start engine and place gear selector in Drive. Using scan tool, observe vehicle speed. If vehicle speed on scan tool matches speedometer, check for proper pinion factor setting (number of tone wheel teeth out of range) and tire calibration (tire revolutions per mile out of range). See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If vehicle speed on scan tool does not match speedometer, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - RAM VAN & RAM WAGON article.
