Body Control Modules: Description

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Two versions of Central Timer Module (CTM) are available on Dakota & Durango models, a base-line version and a high-line version. On base-line versions, body controls for lighting, chime indicator, warning buzzer and intermittent wipers are hard wired to base-line CTM. Base-line CTM does not communicate with any other module. If a fault exists, locate and repair switch, wiring, or buzzer as necessary. This article covers base-line models, but mainly applies to high-line models. High-line models are those equipped with optional factory equipment or factory added extra equipment such as Power Door Locks (PDL) and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), illuminated entry or Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) systems. The Central Timer Module (CTM) manages most all body related system electrical functions.

On high-line models, body control module functions are incorporated into the CTM, which may be referred to as a Body Control Module (BCM). CTM communicates with other modules through Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus network. Information related to operation of body systems or features is shared by all modules through CCD bus, and messages are addressed to only be recognized by the module(s) in which the message was intended. This reduces the complexity of vehicle wiring and size of wiring harness. CTM fault messages are accessed through 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) using Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) scan tool, or generic scan tool. CTM controls and supports the following features (if equipped):
