62TE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation

  1. Check condition of the flexplate (1). Replace the flexplate if cracked, distorted or damaged.
    NOTE:

    If the dowel pins are in need of replacement, they are available through parts. The dowel pins are a light press fit into the engine block and can be installed by gently tapping them in if needed.

  2. Be sure transmission dowel pins (2) are present and seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.
  3. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket (3) in the rear of the engine crankshaft.
  4. Install transmission into position.

  5. Install the lower engine-to-transmission fasteners (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  6. Install transmission to engine fastener (1) near valve body oil pan and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  7. Install the shifter cable and bracket (1) to the transmission and securely tighten the two fasteners.
    NOTE:

    The shifter cable bracket is mounted between the transmission and the left engine mount.

  8. Connect the cable to the transmission lever (3)
    CAUTION:

    Do not reuse fasteners. Reusing fasteners and not installing new fasteners tightened to the proper torque specifications may lead to catastrophic failure.

  9. Install all NEW  left side engine mount fasteners. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION .
  10. Lower the vehicle.

  11. Connect solenoid/pressure switch assembly connector (2).

  12. Connect oil cooler lines (4) to transmission. An audible 'click' should be heard. Verify connection by pulling outward.
  13. Connect the turbine speed sensor (5).

  14. Install the upper transmission-to-engine fasteners (1 & 2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  15. Install harness ground wire to stud fastener and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  16. Position coolant bottle mounting bracket to core support and tighten fasteners to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  17. Install the coolant bottle. Refer to BOTTLE, PRESSURIZED COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
  18. Raise the vehicle.

  19. Install the ground cable fastener (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  20. Connect the two output speed sensor harness connectors (1 and 2)

  21. Install the torque converter fasteners (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  22. Position the starter (2) and install the fasteners (1), tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  23. Install the rear engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION .
  24. Install the halfshafts. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  25. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  26. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
  27. Fill the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  28. Fill the transmission. Refer to FLUID, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
