Test 10 - Ignition Relay Testing

Wiring Schematic:

B+ RELAY

The following is a list of the terminal numbers and what they are connected to:

TERMINAL No. DESCRIPTION

1 Connected to the electromagnet and to the ignition switch.
2 Connected to the electromagnet and grounded.
3 Connected to terminal 5 in the energized position, this supplies voltage to the operated device.
5 Has battery voltage supplied to it when the relay is energized and none when the relay is not energized.

1. With a voltmeter, measure the voltage at terminal 3, there should be battery voltage at all times. If not check battery connections, wiring harness and fuse/fuse link.
2. Check that there is voltage at terminal 1 when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. If not check the ignition switch and wiring harness.
3. Check that there is battery voltage at terminal 5 when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. If no voltage is found at terminal 5, and steps 1 and 2 were OK, replace relay.
4. With an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2. The ohmmeter should indicate a resistance value of 75 +/- 5 ohms. If not within specifications, replace ignition relay.
NOTE: Resistance values are approximate and should be used as a guideline only.
5. If all above checks were OK go to TEST 11
