Throttle Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. Disconnect electrical connector from TPS with ignition off.
2. Measure resistance between terminals as follows:
a. On 1989 4-97.4/1.6L engines, measure resistance between terminals 2 and 3.
3. On all models, ohmmeter should indicate 3500-6500 ohms.
4. Connect ohmmeter between terminals as follows;
a. On 1989 4-97.4/1.6L engines, connect ohmmeter between terminals 2 and 4.
5. On all models, slowly operate throttle valve between idle and wide open throttle. Check that resistance values change in proportion to throttle valve operation. The resistance range should vary approximately 500 ohms from that obtained step 3.
6. If resistance values are not as specified, replace TPS.
