Test SP-20A Testing Cruise Control Switch Output

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove horn pad and steering wheel to access cruise control switch connector. Disconnect cruise control switch connector. Inspect connector. If connector condition is not okay, repair connector as necessary. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If connector condition is okay, go to next step.
  2. While pressing cruise control OFF switch, using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, replace cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, release OFF switch.
  3. Press and hold cruise control ON switch and check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is not 670-690 ohms, replace cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is 670-690 ohms, release ON switch.
  4. Press and hold cruise control SET switch and check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is not 1950-2050 ohms, replace cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is 1950-2050 ohms, release SET switch.
  5. Press and hold cruise control RESUME switch and check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is not 5550-5650 ohms, replace cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is 5550-5650 ohms, release cruise control RESUME switch.
  6. Check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is less than 20,000 ohms, replace cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is more than 20,000 ohms, reconnect cruise control switch. Place DRB-II in ohmmeter mode.
  7. Backprobe terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Black wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Black wire between ground and cruise control switch. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, turn ignition switch to ON position. Place DRB-II in voltmeter mode.
  8. Backprobe terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) at cruise control switch connector. If voltage is more than 4.8 volts, replace Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC). Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If voltage is less than 4.8 volts, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect and inspect SBEC connector.
  9. If connector condition is not okay, repair connector as necessary. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If connector condition is okay, place DRB-II in ohmmeter mode. Probe terminal No. 23 (Red/Light Green wire) at SBEC connector. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Light Green wire. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  .
  10. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 23 (Red/Light Green wire) at SBEC connector and terminal No. 1 (Violet wire) at cruise control switch connector. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace SBEC. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If resistance is more than 10 ohms, physically inspect slip rings at top of steering column for damage.
  11. If condition of slip rings is not okay, repair or replace slip rings as necessary. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  . If condition of slip rings is okay, repair open in Red/Light Green wire. Perform VERIFICATION TEST SP-VER  .
