Ignition Power Transistor

  1. Disconnect connector at ignition power transistor. Ignition power transistor is mounted on top of engine, near ignition coil and contains a 8-pin Black connector. See Figure .
  2. To check ignition power transistor for cylinders No. 1 and 4, connect analog type ohmmeter between terminals No. 3 and 8 on ignition power transistor. See Fig 1 . Ensure negative lead of ohmmeter is on terminal No. 8 and positive lead of ohmmeter is on terminal No. 3.
  3. A 1.5-volt battery will be used as the power supply. Connect negative terminal of a 1.5-volt battery to terminal No. 3 on ignition power transistor. See Fig 1 .
  4. Momentarily touch positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery to terminal No. 7 on ignition power transistor. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 8 on ignition power transistor when positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery is connected to terminal No. 7.
  5. Disconnect positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery from terminal No. 7 on ignition power transistor. No continuity should now exist between terminals No. 3 and 8 on ignition power transistor. Replace ignition power transistor if continuity is not as specified.
  6. To check ignition power transistor for cylinders No. 2 and 3, connect analog type ohmmeter between terminals No. 1 and 3 on ignition power transistor. See Fig 2 . Ensure negative lead of ohmmeter is on terminal No. 1 and positive lead of ohmmeter is on terminal No. 3.
  7. Connect negative terminal of a 1.5-volt battery to terminal No. 3 on ignition power transistor. See Fig 2 .
  8. Momentarily touch positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery to terminal No. 2 on ignition power transistor. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 3 on ignition power transistor when positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery is connected to terminal No. 2.
  9. Disconnect positive terminal of 1.5-volt battery from terminal No. 2 on ignition power transistor. No continuity should now exist between terminals No. 1 and 3 on ignition power transistor. Replace ignition power transistor if continuity is not as specified.
