Disassembly And Assembly
Tag all snap rings, thrust washers, shims, spacers and thrust bearings, etc. during disassembly for quick identification and assembly. Failure to follow these instructions will cause damage and transmission failure.
DISASSEMBLY
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the drain plug and gasket (1) and drain the transmission fluid.
- Remove the torque converter (1).
- Remove the breather pipe bracket bolt (1), the breather pip bracket (2) and the breather pipe assembly (3).
- Remove the transmission cooler tube bracket bolts (1).
- Remove the cooler tube retaining bolts (1).
- Remove the Output Speed Sensor (OSS) bolt (1) and the OSS (2).
- Remove the Input Speed Sensor (ISS) bolt (1) and the ISS (2).
- Lift up the lock washer (1) using a suitable screwdriver.
- Remove the nut (2) and lock washer (1).
- Remove the Transmission Range (TR) switch bolt (3).
- Remove the TR switch (4).
- Remove the eight torque converter housing bolts (1) as shown in the figure.
- Remove the seven extension housing bolts (1) as shown in the figure.
- Using a plastic hammer, tap the extension housing to remove the extension housing.
- Remove the snap ring (1) using snap ring pliers and remove the bearing (2).
- Remove the transmission oil pan bolts (1) and remove the transmission oil pan and gasket.
- Remove the three magnets (1) from the transmission oil pan.NOTE:
Inspect the transmission oil pan for foreign material and determine the worn areas of the transmission. For ferrous metal related areas, check for wear of the bearings, gears, and plates. For brass related metal (non-magnetized), check for bushing wear.
- Remove the four transmission oil filter bolts (1) and the transmission oil filter (2).
- Remove the O-ring (1) from the transmission oil filter.
- Disconnect the solenoid wire harness connectors (1) from the solenoids.
- Remove the transmission temperature lock plate bolt (1), the lock plate (2) and the transmission temperature sensor (3).
- Remove the detent spring bolt (1) and the detent spring (2).
- Remove the 19 valve body bolts (1).NOTE:
Take note of the length and location of each bolt for installation.
- Disconnect the manual valve link (1) and remove the valve body.
- Remove the check valve and compression spring (1).
- Remove the three transmission case gaskets and three brake drum gaskets (1).
- If needed, lightly blow compressed air into the oil passage and remove the accumulator pistons and springs (1).NOTE:
Take note of each spring color and location.
- Remove the park rod bracket bolts (1) and the bracket (2).
- Remove the parking rod (1) from the manual valve lever.
- Remove the park pawl shaft (2), the park pawl spring (1) and the park pawl (3).
- Align the sleeve hole (1) with the pin.
- Using a hammer and pin punch, remove the pin (1).
- Pull out the manual shaft (1).
- Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the manual shaft oil seal (1).
- Remove the bolts (1) from the transmission oil pump and remove the transmission oil pump.
- Remove the O-ring (1) from the transmission oil pump.
- Remove the thrust needle bearing and bearing race (1) from the transmission oil pump.
- Remove the clutch drum assembly (1).
- Remove the thrust needle bearing and bearing race (1) from the clutch drum.
- Remove the thrust washers (1, 2) and F2 one-way clutch (3) from the clutch drum.
- Remove the snap ring (1).
- Remove the retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Inspect the lining of all drive plates. If the lining is flaking or has changed color, or if it is worn or the print mark is wearing away, replace with a new drive plate. When replacing, inspect the contact surfaces between the retaining plate, driven plate and drive plate. If they are scratched or have changed color, replace with new parts.
- Remove the F1 one-way clutch (3).
- Remove the snap ring (1) and the B2 brake piston (2).
- Remove the thrust washer (1) and the bearing race (2).
- Remove the front planetary gear (1).
- Remove the thrust washer (1).
- Remove the front and middle ring gear (1).
- Remove the bearing race and thrust needle bearing (1) from front and middle ring gear.
- Remove the retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Inspect the lining of all drive plates. If the lining is flaking or has changed color, or if it is worn or the print mark is wearing away, replace with a new drive plate. When replacing, inspect the contact surfaces between the retaining plate, driven plate and drive plate. If they are scratched or have changed color, replace with new parts.
- Remove the bearing race and thrust needle bearing (1) from middle planetary gear.
- Remove the middle planetary gear (1) and sun gear (2).
- Remove the snap ring (1).
- Remove the piston return spring (2) and B1 brake piston (3).
- Using tools (special tool #9725, Compressor, Spring) (1), (special tool #8244, Puller, Extension Housing) (3, 4) and (special tool #6055, Thrust Button) (2), compress the B2 brake piston spring.
- Remove the B2 brake piston snap ring (1).
- Remove the driven plate, the retaining plates, drive and driven plates and the piston return spring (1).
- Inspect the lining of all drive plates, If the lining is flaking or has changed color, or if it is worn or the print mark is wearing away, replace with a new drive plate. When replacing, inspect the contact surfaces between the retaining plate, driven plate and drive plate. If they are scratched or have changed color, replace with new parts.
- Remove the B2 brake piston (1).
- Remove the stopper spring (1).
- Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring (1).
- Remove the intermediate shaft assembly and disassemble in the order indicated below:
1 Inner race 2 F3 one-way clutch 3 Rear ring gear 4 Bearing race 5 Needle bearing 6 Bearing race 7 Intermediate shaft - Remove the retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Inspect the lining of all drive plates. If the lining is flaking or has changed color, or if it is worn or the print mark is wearing away, replace it with a new drive plate. When replacing, inspect the contact surfaces between the retaining plate, driven plate and drive plate. If they are scratched or have changed color, replace with new parts.
- Remove the rear planetary gear and bearing race and thrust needle bearing (1).
- Remove the brake tube (1).
- Compress the piston return spring using the special tools (special tool #5059-A, 5059B Compressor, Spring) (2), (special tool #2022000210, Press Ring, Clutch Spring) (1)
, (special tool #6310-2, Disc)
, (special tool #6310-7, Nut)
and (special tool #6310, 6310-4 Remover, Bearing/Seal).
- Remove the snap ring (1).
- Remove the piston return spring (1).
- Blow compressed air into the oil passage (1) shown in the figure while pressing the B4 brake piston by hand.
- Remove the B4 brake piston (1).
- Remove the inner brake piston (2) and sleeve (3) from the B4 brake piston (1).
- Remove the O-rings (1) from the inner brake piston.
- Remove the O-rings (1) from the brake piston sleeve.
- Remove the O-ring (1) from the B4 brake piston.
Tools not shown installed for clarity.
ASSEMBLY
- Install a NEW
O-ring (1) on the B4 brake piston.
- Install NEW
O-rings (1) on the inner B4 brake piston.
- Install NEW
O-rings (1) on the B4 brake piston sleeve.
- Assemble the B4 brake piston assembly (1, 2, 3)
- Install the B4 brake piston (1).
- Install the B4 brake piston return spring (1).
- Compress the B4 brake piston return spring using special tools (special tool #5059-A, 5059B Compressor, Spring) (2), (special tool #2022000210, Press Ring, Clutch Spring) (1)
, (special tool #6310-2, Disc)
, (special tool #6310-7, Nut)
and (special tool #6310, 6310-4 Remover, Bearing/Seal).
- Install the B4 brake piston return spring snap ring (1).
- Install the brake tube (1).
- Install the rear planetary (1), bearing race and thrust needle bearing.
- Install the retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Install the intermediate shaft assembly (1-7).NOTE:
Make sure these components are installed:
1 Inner race 2 F3 one-way clutch 3 Rear ring gear 4 Bearing race 5 Needle bearing 6 Bearing race 7 Intermediate shaft - Install the intermediate shaft assembly snap ring (1).
- Install the stopper spring (1) in the transmission case.
- Install the B2 brake piston (1).
- Install the B2 brake piston return spring, retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Using tools (special tool #9725, Compressor, Spring) (1), (special tool #8244, Puller, Extension Housing) (3, 4) and (special tool #6055, Thrust Button) (2), compress the B2 brake piston spring.
- With the special service tools still installed, install the B2 brake piston snap ring (1).
- Install the B1 brake piston (3) and piston return spring (2).
- Install the B1 brake piston snap ring (1).
- Install the middle planetary gear (1) and the sun gear (1).
- Install the front planetary bearing race and thrust needle bearing (1).NOTE:
Before replacing with new drive plates, soak them at least 2 hours in ATF.
- Install the B1 retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Install the front and middle ring gear bearing race and thrust needle bearing (1).
- Install the front and middle ring gear (1).
- Install the front planetary gear thrust washer (1).
- Install the front planetary gear (1).
- Install the F1 one-way clutch inner race sub-assembly (2) and thrust washer (1).
- Install the F1 one-way clutch (3).
- Install the B3 brake piston and cylinder assembly (2).
- Install the B3 brake piston and cylinder assembly snap ring (1).NOTE:
Before replacing with new drive plates, soak them at least 2 hours in ATF.
- Install the B3 retaining plates, drive and driven plates (1).
- Install the snap ring (1).
- Install the thrust washer (2) and the F2 one-way clutch (3) on the clutch drum.
- Install the thrust needle bearing race (1) on the clutch drum.
- Install the thrust needle bearing (1).
- Install the clutch drum assembly (1).
- Install the thrust needle bearing and bearing race (1) on the transmission oil pump.
- Install a NEW
O-ring (1) on the transmission oil pump.
- Install the transmission oil pump (1).
- Install the transmission oil pump bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the manual shaft seal (1).
- Install the manual shaft (1).
- Install the new manual shaft sleeve and retaining pin (1).
- Using a pin punch, dimple the manual shaft sleeve (1).
- Install the park pawl (3), park pawl spring (1) and park pawl shaft (2).
- Install the parking rod (1) to the manual valve lever.
- Install the parking pawl bracket (2), the parking pawl bracket bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Install the NEW
O-rings (1) on accumulator piston C.
- Install the NEW
O-rings (1) on accumulator piston B.
- Install the NEW
O-rings (1) on accumulator piston A.
- Install the accumulator pistons (1) and compression springs.
- Install the transmission case gaskets and brake drum gaskets (1).
- Install the check valve and compression spring (1).
- Connect the manual valve link (1) to the valve body and position the valve body in place.
- Using the bolt location noted during removal, install the 19 valve body bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the detent spring (2), detent spring cover and detent spring bolt (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the transmission fluid temperature sensor (3), the transmission fluid temperature lock plate (2), the transmission fluid temperature lock plate bolt (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Connect the solenoid wire harness connectors (1).
- Install a NEW
O-ring (1) on the transmission oil filter.
- Install the transmission oil filter (2), transmission oil filter bolts (2) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the transmission oil pan magnets (1).
- Install the transmission oil pan gasket, transmission oil pan, transmission oil pan bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the bearing race, thrust bearing, bearing race (2) and using snap ring pliers install the snap ring (1).
- Apply sealant to the extension housing machine surface (1) and spread evenly.
- Install the extension housing, the extension housing bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Install the eight torque converter housing bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the Transmission Range (TR) switch (4).
- Install the TR switch bolt (3) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the TR switch lock washer (1) and nut (2) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Using a suitable tool, push down the lock washer (1) tabs.
- Install the Output Speed Sensor (OSS) (2), the OSS bolt (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the Input Speed Sensor (ISS) (2), the ISS bolt (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the breather pipe (3), the breather pipe bracket (2), the breather pipe bracket bolt (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the cooler tube retaining bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the transmission cooler tube bracket bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the torque converter.
- Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
