Steering System: Column: Installation
- Install the steering column through the steering column opening.
- Raise the column into the mounting location and install the pivot mounting bolts (1). Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
- Install two column mounting nuts (1). Tighten all 4 column fasteners to the proper specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
.NOTE:
A NEW pinch bolt (2) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.
- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- Slide the intermediate shaft (1) onto the steering gear pinion shaft (3).
- Install a NEW
pinch bolt (2). Tighten the bolt to the proper specifications and then remove the position locking sleeve or cut the tie strap. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

- Connect the electrical connectors (2) and the wire harness tie (3) to the electric power steering module.
- Connect the wiring harness connectors (1) at the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).
- Connect the three wiring harness connectors (1).
- Install the Sentry key antenna (2) onto the lock cylinder housing and engage the tabs.
- Install the Knee Air Bag (KAB) bracket. Refer to AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER, INSTALLATION

- Install the steering wheel (1). Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, INSTALLATION .
- Install the driver airbag (2). Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds and. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION and SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, LOWER, INSTALLATION
.WARNING:
Do not connect the battery ground cable without following the proper procedure as indicated in the following step. Personal injury or death may result if the Airbag System Test is not performed first.
- Reconnect the battery ground terminal following the Airbag System Test found in Restraints. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
- Using the scan tool, perform steering angle sensor calibration. Refer to MODULE, ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
- Test the operation of the all column mounted components. If applicable, reset the radio and the clock as necessary.
- Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the steering system.
NOTE:
If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, a diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to determine if alignment of the PROXI configuration data into the new ECU is needed. If PROXI alignment is needed, follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under the Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.
