Injection Timing
- Disconnect ground cables from both batteries. Remove air inlet hose between air cleaner and intake manifold. Disconnect fuel injection pipes from fuel injection pump. Remove hydraulic head plug bolt from injection pump. Align 2° ATDC timing mark on crankshaft pulley with indicator pin by turning crankshaft. See Fig 1 .
- Mount static timing gauge adapter with metric dial indicator (14-0303 & D82L-4201-A) in hydraulic head plug hole. Mount adapter and indicator assembly so indicator pointer is in contact with injection pump plunger and gauge reads about .08" (2 mm). See Fig 2 .
- Slowly rotate crankshaft counterclockwise (reverse direction of engine rotation) until dial indicator pointer stops moving. Crankshaft 2° ATDC timing mark should be about 30-50° away from initial setup position. See Fig 3 .
- Set dial indicator pointer to zero. Turn crankshaft left and right slightly to make sure that indicator pointer does not move from zero setting.
- Turn crankshaft clockwise (in direction of engine rotation) until 2° ATDC timing mark aligns with indicator pin. When mark is aligned with pin, dial indicator reading should be .04" F.0008" (1 mm F.02 mm).
- If timing is not to specification, loosen injection pump attaching bolt and nuts. Turn injection pump housing counterclockwise (reverse direction of engine rotation) past correct position. Rotate pump housing clockwise until timing is correct. Repeat steps 3) through 5) to check timing.
